Bio

Larry grew up down on the farm in upstate New York. His first woodturning was on a treadle sewing machine converted for turning wood. Turning wood has continued to be a hobby and recreation over the years while earning a degree in engineering, and working through the high tech industry of the last half of 20th century. He now works full time at his fully equipped shop in Centerville Rock, Texas doing the work he loves. He produces fine turned wood pieces for furniture, architecture, galleries, and retail shops. He also demonstrates turning for groups and gives lessons in woodturning from beginner to advanced. The primary source of wood is from local trees on the way to the landfill.

Coco is the shop dog, she keeps the armadillos in line.

Artist Statement

When I pick out a piece of wood from my collection of rescued timber I first look at the bark and see if there are any interesting shapes that might be covering up the story hiding below.
After I cut a cookie off the end of the log with a chainsaw to see what history of the tree has to tell me, I reduce the piece to a size that will fit on the lathe.
The grain direction, color, and texture determine what the piece will become after I mount it on the lathe.
My work draws from the work of masters in wood and pottery over the centuries.
I enjoy working with clients to produce a piece that reflects their desires and budget.
